Why You Need to Trim Overhanging Branches on Your Property

Having trees on your property can be great. They provide much-needed shade during the hot summer months, act as a windbreak when the wind is gusting, and may offer an extra level of privacy.

As beneficial as they may be, trees have the potential to be problematic thanks to branches that may grow to hang over your house. Those branches must be trimmed.

Prevent Roof Damage

The biggest reason why it’s essential to trim overhanging branches is to prevent roof damage. More than one roof has been destroyed by a falling tree branch. This is especially likely if the branch is dead or if you live in an area that is prone to high winds and strong storms.

A branch falling on your roof and breaking it isn’t the only sort of damage to be concerned about though. Overhanging branches can scratch your roof if they’re close enough, resulting in damage such as premature shingle loss, curling, and peeling. If left unaddressed, it may even be enough to wear a hole in the roof, which is one of the most common reasons for roof leaks.

Deny Easy Access for Pests

Overhanging branches provide a path of travel for pests that would love to make your house their home. Many roof rats like to climb trees to make their way into your attic.

Mice and squirrels can do the same. Make it a little harder for them to invade by trimming overhanging branches. Trim them back far enough that there’s enough distance between your roof and the ends of the branches that pests can’t jump the distance.

Keep Gutters Cleaner

Leaves on overhanging branches can cause problems as well. When leaves fall off and onto your roof, they’ll make their way into your gutters where they can block them up and cause water to back up. When water backs up to the point where it overflows your gutters, it falls to the ground directly next to your house. If enough water falls and soaks into the soil, it can damage your foundation. It can also seep into your walls and flood your home. Trimming overhanging branches so leaves don’t fall into your gutters is an easy way to prevent a lot of trouble.

Keeping your property clear of overhanging branches is crucial. It helps you protect your property from damage on multiple levels. If you aren’t confident that you can trim overhanging branches without damaging the tree, contact a tree care professional. They have the tools and knowledge to trim overhanging branches safely while doing minimal damage to the tree.
